7 Behaviors of Successful Career Women
There are 7 behaviors I have observed over and over in successful, impact-driven career women. Why “impact-driven” and why do I love working with them? Because when we know why we do what we do, when we are not only in for the money but also creating a career that is aligned with our passion and purpose, that’s when we can create lasting success, which also leads to greater health, wellness and happiness.
Sustainable success is indisputably connected to fulfillment, and we only feel fulfilled when we make a difference. So let’s look at the 7 behaviors that support an impact-driven, successful career:
1. Owning your value
You must believe in yourself before others believe in you. If you don’t, why would they? Building your self-esteem and confidence through a Self-Empowering Mindset & Heartset, your Distinctive Uniqueness and a Body- & Energy-Conscious Presence is essential. That’s why these are 3 of the 4 pillars of my signature framework Powerful Leadership Transformation (PLT)TM. Owning your value is also about knowing what your expertise is worth in the market through regular research.
2. Standing out as the ideal candidate for the role you want
Working hard and waiting to be discovered just doesn’t work. You must be visible and positively memorable; distinguish yourself for the position you want. This requires being fully aware of your unique brilliance and genius (Distinctive Uniqueness), and actively looking for opportunities to show it off.
3. Setting healthy boundaries
Productive people don’t get promoted; strategic people get promoted. Focus on areas and activities that put you in the spotlight, such as high-profile projects, presentations to the leadership team, etc. — anything that gives you positive visibility with the decisionmakers. It clearly pays off to be strategic about what tasks you take on and what you say no to; to manage your responsibilities for the benefit of your career, while reducing your stress. Because lasting success is not possible if you burn out along the way.
4. Sticking to priorities
There’s so much talk about time management. But you cannot manage time. You can only manage your resources within the parameter of time, while understanding the value of it; resources such as money, knowledge, creativity, teams, materials, energy… So, shift your focus from managing time to setting priorities, and then stick to them.
One strategy that has helped me get more out of my day and keep me out of overwhelm, is to determine 1–3 things that absolutely must be accomplished in a particular day, and then do those first (meeting schedule permitting).
5. Showing up powerfully
A compelling, magnetic presence makes all the difference in business, and it can determine whether you close a deal or not; whether you get the job you want, or not.
You may have heard that you have 7 seconds to make a first impression. But have you also heard that it takes a mere .07 seconds for our brains to figure out whether we can trust you? That’s about your Body- & Energy-Conscious Presence. Your energy speaks louder than your words… and faster! So don’t forget to prepare energetically for negotiations or any other challenging situations in business. Maybe try some techniques of Speak up, Stand out and Shine.
6. Opening up new possibilities
Successful women don’t live inside a box. They’ve thrown the box out long ago, and they look beyond their current situation. They a visionary and they are constantly exploring new avenues, even when they are happy in their current job.
Your possibilities are unlimited when you break out of your box, when you strategically expand your network, and open your mind and channels to new opportunities (Self-Empowering Mindset & Heartset). What about proactively turning your present role into one that offers growth and opportunities to show your leader potential even before you are promoted?
7. Co-creating with others
As a successful woman, you want to invest your energy into co-creation, rather than competition. You understand that shared success is sustainable success, and that as a leader, you are expected to create a collaborative environment, where everyone’s contribution is valued, and all can thrive. Your co-creational spirit will help you save precious energy, and it will reflect back on you in many ways: your reputation, likeability and personal brand; but also the results you generate together with others.
And last, but not least, you want to build a support team, your personal advisory board that you co-create your success with, and which ideally includes a mentor or a coach, or both.
If you want to increase your income, influence and impact, I invite you to look at these 7 behaviors and assess where you need to make adjustments so you can enjoy sustainable success coupled with fulfillment.
